Feint to go forward, find the space and shoot!

This week's Sportplan session works on getting your players running dynamically to get past the other team's defenders - using short sharp changes of direction to dummy and feint their way into a position where they can wind back and fling a fiery shot on goal!

To ensure all your players can weave like Ivano Balic, the Croatian middle back sensation who is considered to be one of the best handball players in the world, this week's session builds up the intensity through three structured drills before culminating in a game to allow your players to put what they've learnt into practice!

Starting with a one versus one feint and run with the ball drill you will be able to highlight the best examples to the rest of your team, using these players as models for the rest of your team to copy.

Once all your players have the technique of a convincing dummy down they can then work their way through the other exercises, learning how to drive wide before cutting, leaving their defender standing, and firing an unobstructed shot on goal before finishing with a fun game of of rugby handball!

Free throws should be free goals!

As the saying goes "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade", well when it comes to handball I say "when the referee gives you a free throw, score goals!".

Easy to say and less easy to do so in practice, yes, I know that all too well. However, if you can get your team to vary their approach to free throws and not always throw the ball directly at goal your team will become less predictable, they'll open up gaps in the opposition's defence and ultimately score more!

To help you stretch the opposition and get a clear shot on goal this week's session works on free throw plays; a set routine that your players can use against any team whenever they get a free throw.

Before starting any sort of free throw work we need to get your players warm, to avoid any injuries and get them into the handball mood. To do this we start with a passing variety drill to get their arms going before working the give and go in a fast and frantic running drill.

Once fully warmed up we then get down to the serious business of practising these free throws. Starting with a relatively simple play we gradually add different elements to increase the complexity of the plays. After practising these plays we then go into a full court game where you can stop the game at any point to award a free throw to the team in possession - to put your players have just learned into practice!

Technical running - Introduction to the cross-over

This week's Sportplan session aims to get your players running intelligently, switching sides to lose their markers, obscure the keeper's view and confuse the opposition's defence.

Cross over running is an important technique for your players to learn. Not only is it an attractive way to play handball with the added benefit of blocking the goalkeeper's view but it also enables you to overcome teams which insist on man marking your players throughout the entire game.

By crossing over from one side to another you will be able to confuse even the best of defenders, as they attempt to follow their man without knowing where the ball has gone.

To introduce your players to this style of running and passing we start with a simple cross over drill, with players running from one side of the court to the other, when they meet in the middle the player in possession pops the ball up to the other player for them to run onto and carry away.

After this we then start to look at how this skill can be used for maximum effect in a game by increasing the pace and adding a shooting element into the exercises. Depending on your players' ability you can even add a defender into the mix to see how your players cope under pressure when making their cross over runs!
